Best Places to Find Wildflowers in Washington and Oregon
Mount Rainier National Park, WA
Best time to visit: Late July through mid-August
The Paradise and Sunrise areas explode with color in midsummer. Expect to see lupine, paintbrush, avalanche lilies, and beargrass. The backdrop of the mountain makes these blooms even more breathtaking.
Tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds and bring a lightweight camping mess kit for a post-hike picnic.
Dog Mountain, WA - Columbia River Gorge
Best time to visit: Late April through May
This steep trail is known for its showy fields of yellow balsamroot and purple lupine, all overlooking the Columbia River. It’s a favorite among photographers and wildflower hunters.
Note: A weekend permit is required during peak bloom. Plan accordingly.
Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, WA
Best time to visit: Late May through early July
This recovering volcanic landscape bursts with wildflowers in late spring. Keep an eye out for Indian paintbrush, penstemon, and lupine as nature slowly reclaims the blast zone.
