5 Outdoor Summer Essentials for 2016

As the sun’s warming rays make their way back into our lives much like an old friend, it’s time to launch ourselves headfirst into camping season. Whether you’re sporting a goggle tan or the more common office tan, we can all agree that it’s time to get outside and stay outside. It’s time to welcome summer back into our lives, and in the Northwest we are absolutely enthralled with the change in season. Rainy, gray days are beginning to make way for blue skies and great company. Whether you view summer as backpacking season, music festival season, camping season or backyard season, we can all agree many of our favorite activities revolve around the warmest season.

Festival goers rejoice as it’s nearly time for Bumbershoot, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza or much, much more. Backpackers and thru-hikers are beginning to mark their calendars with dreams of hiking sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail or the John Muir Trail as more consistent weather is approaching. Outdoor enthusiasts all around the world are going to flock to some of our nation’s most majestic national parks, which will be having their centennial celebration this August. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or are able to take more extended trips, the time has come for dreams to become reality. Summer is welcoming us all with open arms, and we sincerely hope that everyone will embrace the beautiful weather and escape the office.
Here at UCO, post-work hikes, runs, and trips to the crag are becoming more common. Look closely and you can see a wandering gaze turn to the view outside as the weather continues to improve. We are all eager for our family trips, personal adventures, afternoons by the beach and much more. We’ve created a lot of new items for summer 2016, but here’s a sneak peak of a few of our absolute favorites.

Flatpack Grill and Firepit

People tend to revolve around food that is being cooked, and this is especially true when you’re grilling with friends or family at a picnic, tailgate or trip to the beach. While the phrase “too many cooks in the kitchen” doesn’t exactly apply to the outdoors, you can’t blame others for wanting to inspect what you’re grilling up. One of our absolute favorite items for this summer is the Flatpack Portable Grill & Firepit. This stainless steel grill packs completely flat to fit in your packpack. A stainless steel grate offers a platform to cook your favorite steaks, portobellos, burgers or kababs, but it can actually be removed if you’d like to just use the Flatpack as a mobile firepit, perfect for those leave no trace situations. The wide legs offer a stable, sturdy base, and the entire setup only takes about 30 seconds to set up. For any beach bonfire, BBQ in the park or tailgate, we highly suggest checking out this lightweight portable grill.

A-120 Comfort Headlamp

Here at UCO, we firmly believe that comfort should be one of the most important features of a headlamp. If you’ve ever worn a headlamp that was slightly too tight for more than about an hour, then you know exactly what we’re talking about. When we designed the UCO A-120 Comfort-fit Headlamp, this was one of the most important aspects that we took into consideration. The A-120 has a super soft, adjustable neporene strap with hook & loop adjustment that allows you to get the perfect fit quickly without having to slide pieces of plastic back and forth like you do with many of the other headlamps on the market. The headlamp’s body has a unique hinge that causes there to be no hard point on your forehead. By moving the battery pack to the back of the head rather than on your forehead, we are able to balance the distribution of weight for the most comfortable fit on the market. With additional features like leather patches and a 120 lumen dial adjustment, this headlamp combines rustic and modernity. The patch on our battery pack reminds you to ‘Stay Lit’, and we genuinely believe that once you try the A-120 on you’ll never want to revert to your other headlamps.

Wild Candle Lantern

The newest item in our candle lantern line is actually an update on a camping classic that we’ve made for over 40 years. The Wild Series Original Candle Lantern takes our classic durable, aluminum lantern and projects our confidence in our products. Each of these comes with a 9-hour candle that will provide that pleasent timeless glow for illuminating any tent, picnic table or back porch, and can be hung from an included chain for some elevated light. Should you be in the deep forest, or anywhere with moisture for that matter, hanging a candle lantern in your tent keeps you and your stuff dry. Remember: Don’t Camp Damp! Citronella replacement candles are available to defend off those pesky bugs. Another awesome feature: the candle is collapseable to easy packing and to protect the glass chimney.

Stormproof Torch and Bottle Opener

The Stormproof Torch and Bottle Opener is one of our favorite campground tools. Not only will it help you start your bonfire, but it will also crack open that tasty beverage that you’ve been thinking about all afternoon. This 2-in-1 camping essential has a silicone cap that covers the triple jet, butane powered lighter. This little guy packs a punch, and fits perfectly in your pocket.

Stormproof Matches Kit

Ever had your matches or lighter get wet on a camping trip? They become useless pretty fast. Your perfectly crafted combustible combination of dryer lint, egg cartons and cotton balls can only work if it has the appropriate fire source to cause it to catch, and flimsy, damp matches or a soaked lighter simply won’t do. Our Stormproof Matches are some of the most weatherproof, robust matches on the market. They are windproof and waterproof. On top of that, they come in a case of 25 with 3 replacement strikers. With a 15 second burn time, you’re given ample time to start your kindling for your fire pit. If you’ve ever been in a camping situation where your Firestarter gets wet but isn’t weatherproof, then you’ll understand why these matches are miraculous.

We hope to see many of you on the trails, at the crags, on the water and most importantly, out of the office. Cheers to the summer!

Remember always #Staylit.
